Several residents were evacuated from their homes after a fire broke out in a block of flats in St Helier.
According to Jersey Fire and Rescue Service, a mother and her children returned to their Green Street property on Monday afternoon to discover their kitchen filled with smoke. A bag of shopping left on the cooker hob had begun to smoulder, prompting the blaze.
Fire crews cleared the building as a precaution. A number of residents received treatment for smoke inhalation, though officials confirmed there were no serious injuries.
Following the incident, the fire service issued a reminder about the risks of using cookers as makeshift worktops, warning that items left on hobs can ignite if the appliance is switched on accidentally.
