Islanders Urged to Save Water After Record-Dry Spring

Channel Islanders are being asked to reduce water use following an unusually warm and dry spring. Jersey saw its warmest and third driest spring on record, while Guernsey experienced its second warmest.

Water reserves are below average on both islands. Jersey Water reported reservoir levels at 89.1%—below both five- and ten-year averages—but said there’s no immediate concern. However, they may use the desalination plant if needed later this summer. Guernsey Water also noted levels slightly below comfort, urging residents to rethink non-essential water use like garden watering and car washing.

Businesses like hotels are facing challenges managing usage, especially with amenities like swimming pools. In contrast, Jersey’s La Mare Wine Estate is benefiting from the dry weather, thanks to rainwater storage and deep-rooted vines.

No restrictions are currently in place, but both utilities say they may be introduced if dry conditions persist.
