Digital boost for Jersey children as JT donates tablets to support music learning

Telecommunications provider JT has donated four tablet devices to help improve access to digital music education for children from lower-income families in Jersey.

The devices will be used by charity Music in Action as part of its musical education social access scheme, which currently supports around 90 children from families receiving income support.

The programme provides young people with opportunities including specialist instrumental lessons, small-group sessions, performances and access to practice clubs through a bursary scheme.

JT said the new tablets would allow students to store and share music digitally during lessons, helping them develop their ability to read music and understand theory through a more interactive learning experience.

Naomi Mews, treasurer of Music in Action, said the donation would help the charity make music education more accessible.

“Music has the power to transform a child's confidence, wellbeing and outlook, but access to learning tools is not equal for every family,” she said.

“These tablets will make a real difference to our students, allowing them to read music, explore theory and develop skills in a way that is fun, interactive and inclusive.”

The charity said the devices would help remove some of the barriers faced by children who may otherwise struggle to access the same educational resources as their peers.

JT’s head of human resources Laura Belo said the company wanted to support initiatives where technology could have a positive impact on the community.

“Supporting Music in Action with devices that enhance learning and development, creativity and confidence for young people is a great example of how digital can be used for good,” she said.

“Music education builds skills for life, and we’re proud to support a programme that is creating meaningful opportunities for children who might otherwise miss out.”
