Channel Islands Ministers at Odds Over Inter-Island Ferry Offer
A new offer to run vehicle and freight ferries between Jersey and Guernsey has sparked political tension between the islands.
The proposal, put forward by a group called Ferry Bridge, follows a reduction in large inter-island vessels under newly signed ferry contracts with different operators in each island.
Jersey’s Deputy Kirsten Morel, who led ferry negotiations, expressed support for the idea and questioned Guernsey’s reluctance. “We’re being offered solutions Jersey wants, but we’re getting pushback,” he said.
Guernsey’s Deputy Neil Inder, however, called Morel’s comments “incredulous” and said any new ferry deal was incompatible with Guernsey’s current legal and licensing arrangements.
Despite fewer options for vehicle travel, foot passenger services continue, including daily crossings by Guernsey firm Islands Unlimited and links to France via Manche Iles Express.
