Senior crew routinely broke maritime safety rules on the Condor vessel that collided with a fishing trawler, killing three men, Jersey’s Royal Court has been told.
Second officer Lewis Carr and lookout Artur Sevash-Zade deny gross negligence manslaughter over the 2022 deaths of skipper Michael Michieli and his crew, Larry Simyunn and Jervis Baligat.
The court heard Carr sent Sevash-Zade for breakfast minutes into his shift, leaving the bridge manned by just one officer.
Maritime expert Captain Brian McJury said this breached international rules requiring at least two crew on watch at all times.
He described the practice of reassigning lookouts to other duties as “common” but against mandated principles. The defence argued that lookouts were expected to follow orders, though McJury said they could raise concerns.
The trial continues.
