Community Service Hours for Offenders Double in a Year

The number of community service hours completed by offenders nearly doubled in 2024, according to Chief Probation Officer Mike Cutland. More than 16,000 hours of unpaid work—valued at over £180,000—were carried out, up from 8,700 hours in 2023.

Community service orders, an alternative to prison sentences, have increased, with 124 issued in 2024 compared to 113 in 2023. Probation orders also rose from 67 to 76. Cutland believes this reflects the courts' confidence in the probation service.

The service found alcohol misuse, emotional instability, and relationship problems were key factors in offending. Nearly 80% of probation orders and 90% of community service orders were successfully completed, with no rise in re-convictions.

Government investment has helped address staff shortages and improve rehabilitation efforts, supporting offenders in leading law-abiding lives.
