Islanders woke up to a frigid and icy morning today as a cold snap swept across the island, bringing near-freezing conditions and slippery surfaces. Temperatures struggled to climb above around 4–6°C early on, with wind chills making it feel even colder under clear skies before sunrise.
Motorists and pedestrians are urged to take extra care this morning after frost and patches of black ice formed on untreated roads and footpaths overnight. Local authorities reminded drivers to reduce speed and maintain safe distances as surfaces remained treacherous in shaded areas, particularly on rural lanes and bridges.
The Met Office and local weather services report that while snowfall is unlikely, the cold conditions are expected to continue today, with intermittent rain turning to drizzle and brisk winds keeping temperatures low through the afternoon.
Commuters experienced slick starts to their day, with school buses and public transport facing minor delays as drivers adapted to icy spots on key routes across St Helier and the parishes.
Despite the chill, no severe weather warnings have been issued locally, and forecasters say conditions should gradually improve later in the week as temperatures edge back up, though cold mornings are likely to persist for a few days.
