Christmas Spirit Shared All Year Long

A Jersey charity supporting some of the island’s most vulnerable residents says its work to spread kindness and connection continues long after Christmas Day.

The Grace Trust, which assists around 700 to 750 people each year, says it is seeing growing demand from a broader cross-section of society, including an increasing number of older islanders seeking companionship and community support.

The charity helps people affected by poverty, loneliness and addiction, operating from its drop-in centre on Lewis Street in St Helier. General manager Vinni Jones said the aim was simple: to offer warmth, dignity and a sense of belonging throughout the year.

Alongside its food bank, which supports about 500 people annually, the trust runs regular activities including singing groups, art sessions and Saturday lunches.

During the festive period, the charity provided additional seasonal treats at the food bank and hosted a Christmas lunch at St Paul’s Centre, where 92 guests were served by a team of 20 volunteers. Entertainment on the day came from local band Fiddler’s Green and the trust’s own Parklife choir.

Mr Jones said Christmas can be an especially difficult time for many, which often leads to an increase in people seeking help.

“People are always welcome,” he said. “They can just come down, knock on the window, and we’ll share whatever we have.”

He added that the trust’s support extends beyond food, with many visitors unaware of the range of social activities available. People are encouraged to get involved and try something new.

The charity also operates a fund to support young mothers and works with partner organisations to provide toy vouchers for families at Christmas.

Importantly, Mr Jones said help does not stop when the festive season ends.

“We’re here in January, in February — all year round,” he said. “It’s about offering understanding and being there to talk things through.”

Meanwhile, the government has reminded islanders that mental health support remains available over the Christmas period. The Adult Mental Health Crisis Team can be contacted 24 hours a day on 445 290, with additional online support provided through Together All.
