Residents from a Jersey care home have taken part in a festive outing to a temporary ice rink, enjoying the experience from the comfort of their wheelchairs.
Staff from St Joseph’s Care Home in St Helier organised the visit to the ice rink at the Weighbridge as part of their Christmas activities, marking the first time the home has arranged such an event.
Among those taking part was 86-year-old Charles Henwood, who described the trip as a new and enjoyable experience. He said it was “very nice” and added that he had never been on an ice rink before.
Mr Henwood said watching younger skaters added to the enjoyment. “It’s ideal for them as they skate around and pass us,” he said, reflecting on the lively atmosphere.
Care home staff said residents responded positively to the outing. Anabela Sequeira, who accompanied the group, said the experience had been memorable for everyone involved. “It’s been beautiful and amazing, and they really enjoyed it,” she said, adding that staff also appreciated seeing residents take part in something different.
St Joseph’s Care Home supports around 100 residents and said the trip was part of its efforts to create inclusive and meaningful seasonal experiences.
