A Jersey woman who opens her home to survivors of human rights abuses has been named the winner of the BBC Radio Jersey Make a Difference Award.

Genette Dagtoglou works with the Prisoners of Conscience Holiday Fund – Jersey, which arranges therapeutic breaks on the island for refugees living in the UK.

Judges said Dagtoglou stood out among more than 50 nominees. Somali journalist Abdalle Mumin, who stayed with her after fleeing persecution, praised her as “a true hero.”

Surprised by the award, Dagtoglou said she was moved by how much visiting Jersey means to those she welcomes. She plans to continue her voluntary work for as long as she can.
