The UK’s aviation watchdog has published a formal notice aimed at helping customers reclaim the cost of flights they bought from an airline that has since collapsed.
The Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) released what is known as a “negative response letter” following the announcement that Blue Islands entered liquidation on Monday.
According to the regulator, travellers who paid for Blue Islands flights using credit, charge or debit cards may find their card issuer requires written confirmation that the airline has ceased trading before processing a refund request.
The CAA confirmed that Blue Islands was not protected under the Air Travel Organisers’ Licensing (ATOL) scheme, which safeguards consumers and oversees travel companies.
In the letter, the authority outlines that the airline halted operations and cancelled all remaining flights last Friday, ahead of formally going into administration at the start of the week.
Passengers are advised to contact their card provider, insurance company or travel agent for further guidance on securing reimbursement for their bookings.
