Guernsey’s authorities have approved an airline to operate flights between the island and Jersey after introducing new measures to protect key air links.

The Transport Licensing Authority (TLA) confirmed it has issued a licence to States-owned carrier Aurigny, following an application submitted on 17 November. Two other applications to run services on the route are also under consideration and are expected to be assessed shortly.

The decision comes as the States of Guernsey prepares to classify the Guernsey–Jersey connection as an “essential air route” from January, a move prompted by the collapse of Blue Islands last month.

Officials said the licensing system was introduced by the Committee for Economic Development to strengthen reliability and resilience on vital routes.

Airlines must hold a licence to operate services deemed essential to the island, including routes to Jersey, Southampton, Alderney and Gatwick.

TLA president Deputy John Gollop said Aurigny was selected following what he described as a thorough and robust assessment process. He also thanked members of the public and stakeholders for their input during the consultation period.
