Jersey’s Annual Rowathon Kicks Off to Support Cancer Charity
An indoor rowing challenge is taking place in Jersey today, raising funds for Macmillan Cancer Support Jersey.
The annual rowathon is being held at the Radisson Blu Waterfront Hotel from 08:00 to 16:00, with teams of six taking on the challenge of rowing the equivalent distance from Jersey to Sark—approximately 18 miles (29km)—on indoor rowing machines.
Kevin Alway, operations and communications lead for the charity, highlighted the impact of the event. “Community events like our rowathon allow us to provide crucial emotional, practical, and wellbeing support to anyone in Jersey affected by cancer,” he said.
Businesses and organizations from across the island have been invited to take part, with each team aiming to raise around £1,000. The event, sponsored by Standard Bank Offshore, hopes to surpass £20,000 in total to fund vital cancer support services at the Lido Medical Centre.
Standard Bank Offshore’s chief executive, Charles Molteno, praised the initiative. “The rowathon is a fantastic example of how the community can come together to make a real difference for islanders impacted by cancer,” he said.
Participants and supporters are encouraged to get involved, whether by rowing, donating, or cheering on the teams as they take on the endurance challenge for a worthy cause.
