A 21-year-old man has admitted to a serious assault after throwing a glass at another man during an altercation in a nightclub, leaving the victim with cuts to his face and neck.
Jakob Charlie Warwick Stanton pleaded guilty to grave and criminal assault at the Magistrate’s Court following the incident, which took place on 20 July last year.
CCTV footage played in court showed Stanton and the victim arguing inside the venue before the victim slapped Stanton. In response, Stanton attempted to punch him, the victim retaliated, and Stanton then threw a glass, which shattered on impact, causing significant injuries. A court-displayed image revealed the extent of the victim’s wounds.
Prosecutor Luisa Stuart described Stanton’s actions as a “deliberate attack”, highlighting that he had switched the glass between hands before throwing it.
Magistrate Bridget Shaw acknowledged there had been “some provocation” but condemned Stanton’s reaction as “wholly out of proportion”, warning that the outcome could have been far worse. While she opted to handle the case within the Magistrate’s Court rather than refer it to the Royal Court, she noted that Stanton could still face a sentence at the top of the court’s sentencing powers.
Stanton was released on bail ahead of sentencing on 11 March, allowing time for a pre-sentence report to be prepared.
