Investigations Continue After Sinkhole in St Helier
Road closures remain in place in the La Pouquelaye area of St Helier as investigations continue into the extent of structural damage caused by a sinkhole.
The sinkhole at Rouge Bouillon emerged following a burst water main in December, leading to underground voids beneath buildings and infrastructure, according to the Government of Jersey. As a result, the road remains closed between Clarendon Road and Palmyra Road while safety assessments and repairs take place, the Infrastructure and Development (I&D) department confirmed.
Safety Measures and Ongoing Assessments
To stabilise affected buildings, steel strapping is being installed on a property in Clarendon Road. Structural and geotechnical engineers will later assess soil conditions beneath the foundations to determine if further movement has occurred.
An alternative route map has been provided to residents while road closures remain in effect. Officials have urged motorists to avoid the area and use alternative routes, as other traffic diversions have been ruled out.
A government spokesperson described the situation as "highly complex," noting that several nearby walls and buildings have sustained severe cracks and significant movement.
A review of the site is scheduled for 2 May, after which officials will determine when the road can safely reopen.
"We understand that the closure has significant impacts on daily travel and local businesses," the government added.
