Islanders between the age of 50 and 64 can now book to receive their free flu vaccination from their GPs or from pharmacies. This year the flu vaccinations are being distributed free of charge as it forms part of the crucial fight against COVID-19.
Medical Director for Primary Care, Dr Adrian Noon, said: “It’s more important than ever to get vaccinated against the flu. People vulnerable to flu are also at risk of complications from COVID-19. A high uptake in flu vaccinations will help improve the general respiratory health of all Islanders. This will also help us reduce the pressure on our health services and allow for a better delivery of care for all Islanders.
“The flu vaccine does not protect you from COVID-19 but when the COVID vaccination becomes available a month between receiving the flu vaccine will need to be given.
“We have enough stock to now be distributing the flu vaccine far more widely to this cohort, so we encourage everyone in this age group to please seek and receive a vaccine.
“A high uptake of the flu vaccine will reduce any confusion with COVID symptoms due to some overlaps such as high temperatures. Flu symptoms tend to come on suddenly whereas COVID is slower to show symptoms.”
