Main coastal roads to close in Jersey ahead of Storm Ciarán

Updated: Nov 3, 2023

The main coastal roads in Jersey will be closed to the public from Wednesday evening ahead of Storm Ciarán, the government has said.

Islanders have been told to prepare for the storm, which is set to bring winds of up to 90mph (145km/h). Sandbags have been put in place along the south coast and on slipways to prevent flooding. Victoria Avenue and Havre des Pas will close at 17:30 GMT, and islanders are advised to work from home on Thursday.

The Condor Commodore Goodwill arrived on Wednesday morning with "extra goods" to ensure supermarkets would be well stocked, including fresh food, the government said.

Owners of all vehicles parked in laybys one to four on Victoria Avenue have been asked to remove them by 17:30 as there will be "no access allowed after this time". The government advised islanders not to park in any coastal car parks and said it was working to ensure road closures and "other disruptions" would be managed "effectively".

Jersey Police Chief Officer Robin Smith said islanders should stay indoors on Thursday.

He said: "The importance message is only essential travel for all islanders, and that's often code for - 'Stay at home,' so that's what I urge islanders to do; stay at home, particularly on Thursday and Thursday morning."
