Residents label road improvement project 'an expensive mistake'

A trial scheme aimed at enhancing pedestrian and bus facilities outside Trinity Primary School has sparked controversy, with some residents calling it a "costly mistake" and others voicing concerns that the road has become too narrow for the parish’s Battle of Flowers float to pass through.

The government initiated the trial after a recent survey identified challenges with crossing to the playing fields and waiting for buses on the busy road. However, local residents have expressed frustration, claiming that new 20mph speed limits were introduced "by stealth" and are unnecessary. Many have reacted with confusion and anger to the changes.

Infrastructure Minister Andy Jehan emphasised that this is a trial, with a consultation period set to begin on 9 September.

As part of the scheme, the Infrastructure and Environment Department has installed a temporary footpath to narrow the road and improve crossing points, and a full-time 20mph speed limit has replaced the previous part-time limit.

Jehan urged Islanders to provide feedback, noting that all comments will be considered in shaping the final, permanent plan.
