Proposal submitted for new £750k playgrounds development.

In July, ratepayers attending a parish assembly approved a £750,000 budget for the project. The Town Hall has since submitted two separate applications for planning permission.

The proposed designs are inspired by the successful new playground in St Martin. Additionally, officials plan to build a second playground for children up to six years old, located next to the existing café.

Connor Burgher, Head of Engagement, stated that parish officials are seeking support from the business community to help offset some of the project's £750,000 cost. "It's been a very long time since any significant investment has been made in the parks," he noted. "Now is the time to revitalize them and create a community asset for young people to enjoy."

Designer Emily Jennings described the new playgrounds as "transformational" for the children of St Helier. She emphasized that the playgrounds will cater to both younger and older children, allowing families to spend more time there together. Jennings also acknowledged the challenge of meeting the needs of all age groups, particularly teenagers, who currently have limited options on the island. She expressed her passion for creating a space where older children would feel welcome, noting that they often face difficulties using equipment designed for younger kids.

With planning approval still pending, the parish reported that its public engagement exercise indicated strong support for both the refurbished and new playgrounds. If approved, work on the two playgrounds is expected to be completed by the end of spring 2025.
