A proposition has been lodged to allow the Minister for Social Security to increase the minimum wage in Jersey in January 2022.
The current minimum wage was set at £8.32 an hour in April 2020 and has stayed at that level since. Due to the Covid-19 pandemic, the Employment Forum, which has the task of advising the Social Security Minister on the appropriate level of the minimum wage, has been unable to carry out its usual consultation exercise.
If approved by the States Assembly, the Minister intends to set the minimum wage at £9.22 an hour from 1 January 2022.
Minister for Social Security, Deputy Judy Martin, said: "In March 2018 the States Assembly agreed a target for a minimum wage rate. It's now time to deliver on that agreement, and £9.22 an hour meets the target. The pandemic has particularly affected those on the lowest wages. That's why I'm proposing a significant increase in the rate to make sure those employees on the minimum wage get a reasonable pay rise.
"This proposition will deliver on the States Assembly's commitment to raise the minimum wage in Jersey."
