Jersey allocates additional £250k to enhance digital forensics unit

Jersey Police's digital forensics unit has received a £250,000 investment, as nearly all crimes now involve a digital element.

About 90% of police investigations include the use of phones, laptops, and other digital devices. Digital forensics accelerates criminal proceedings by encouraging early guilty pleas and ensuring faster justice for victims.

Chief of Police Robin Smith emphasised the importance of investing in digital forensics for modern policing, expressing his intent to push for further funding.

Chief Smith also highlighted the challenging past 18-19 months, citing major incidents such as the sinking of L’Ecume II, the Haut du Mont explosion, a double fatal car crash, and a rare terrorism case. He acknowledged the government's support in funding these investigations but noted the ongoing pressure to reduce public sector costs.

Jersey Police, which currently employs 128 staff and around 200 officers, will not be filling two vacant positions as part of cost-cutting measures.
