Twelve students from Grainville School will welcome workers from Health and Community Services for a red-carpet Gala dinner to thank them for their work during the COVID-19 pandemic.
The dinner - which took place on Thursday 13 May from 6.30pm at the Highlands College Academy Restaurant – has been organised by Year 10 students from Grainville, who are currently studying for the Jersey Progression Qualification in Culinary Skills and Hospitality.
With the support of Highlands College tutors, the students have organised all aspects of the event, including planning the menu, creating promotional material, and planning risk assessments.
Students will be cooking and serving all the food and drink on the night of the event. They have also written to local businesses to request donations of food and drink, decorations, and raffle prizes.
The Grainville students have decided to organise the event in recognition of how much Health and Community Services helped the Island through the challenges of the last year.
The attendees are all people in Health and Social Services who have gone above and beyond their daily duties in the last year. Each of them has been selected by the Chief Nurse, Rose Naylor, so that their work can be recognised.
Highlands College has supported the event as part of its priority to 'Put the Community First.' This is one of many projects, involving around 170 students from other schools, which see the college partnering with Islanders and local businesses to give back to the community at large.
Emma Gavey, a Year 10 Hospitality student said: "As a group, we feel extremely privileged to be able to say thank you for all the support, hard work and commitment that health and social care workers have shown throughout the last year.
"We've been working hard behind the scenes now to make this event as joyful as possible and to show our gratitude."
Jo Terry-Marchant, Principal of Highlands College said, "This wonderful project is led by the students' genuine desire to give back to our lovely health and community staff. These young people are a credit to their Island community."
