Boating event aims to help teenagers access the water.

An event aimed at sparking an interest in boating among young islanders is set to take place next month.

Ports of Jersey announced that the educational event, "Get Afloat," will be held on 7 September at Albert Pier and the harbour. The initiative is designed to engage teenagers aged 13 to 18 in activities such as sailing and operating rigid inflatable boats (RIBs).

Event organiser Michel Le Moine noted that it can be "challenging" for young people to get involved in boating if their friends or family aren't already participating in the sport.

'Fun, informative, and inspiring'

Ports of Jersey (POJ) is partnering with Le Mourier Swim-Sea-Save and South Pier Marine to host the event.

"We want to break down the barriers around these activities, offering a hands-on experience and showing how boating is accessible without the need to own a vessel," said Mr. Le Moine.

He added, "This day is meant to be fun, informative, and inspiring, and I hope as many young people as possible will join us to explore the world of boating."

POJ also stated that participants will have the chance to steer a RIB with instructor guidance, try dinghy sailing, and learn about sea safety.
