Approximately 30 people evacuated following apartment fire.

Approximately 30 people were evacuated from their apartments after a fire broke out, according to the Jersey Fire and Rescue Service.

The fire started in a self-catering suite at the Merton Hotel in St Helier on Tuesday at approximately 22:45 and quickly spread throughout the building. Residents were temporarily relocated to a nearby hotel for safety.

One resident, who woke up to find his room filled with fire and heavy smoke, managed to escape by using a fire blanket to control the flames. He was treated at the scene for smoke inhalation and minor injuries.

The fire service reported that four firefighters, equipped with breathing apparatus, entered the building to contain the fire and prevent further smoke damage. An investigation and clean-up operation are currently underway.

In a statement shared on the fire service's Facebook page, it was noted that the quick actions of the resident and firefighters helped to manage the situation effectively.
