Several parents from Jersey's African community gathered for a seminar on supporting their children's upbringing on the island.
The event was organized by the Christian group Mount Hope SDA and took place at Rouge Bouillon Primary School on Saturday. Russell Price, the school's head teacher, offered guidance on motivating children to excel academically, while Tina Hesse from the Child and Adolescent Mental Health Service (CAMHS) provided insights on fostering resilience in children.
This was the first time the faith group organised such an event, and group leaders mentioned plans to hold similar sessions in the future. Tapiwa Munyawiri, a member of Mount Hope SDA who attended the seminar, noted that many parents who grew up in Africa find parenting in Jersey "exciting but challenging" as they strive to "balance work and life."
Mr. Munyawiri added, "We wanted expert advice for this evolving society, which differs greatly from how our parents raised us."
He also mentioned that attendees expressed a strong desire for more events like this, and the group is now working on scheduling future seminars and determining their frequency.
